Shen Cheng Li

An old community environment improving design including mini program and projection mapping.

Background

Xuhuiheng Resurrection Area is the largest among the 12 historical and cultural features in the central city of Shanghai. It has the most historical buildings and complete historical and cultural features. Shenchengli is a large-scale and relatively well-preserved new-style Shikumen Lane in the Xuhuiheng Reappearance Zone. Built in 1930, Shenchengli is an excellent historical community in Shanghai. There are 15 houses in the community, with a total construction area of about 15,000 square meters and 505 households. Public housing accounts for about 90%.

The Shikumen was born in the early 1870s. It was originated from the residential form of Jiangnan dwellings, generally three-bay or five-bay, maintaining the symmetrical layout of traditional Chinese buildings on the central axis. In the 1950s and 1960s instead of focusing on carvings, the pursuit of simplicity became mainstream. Multi-entry was changed to single-entry. The Shikumen residence, which combines Chinese and Western styles, came into being.

Field Research

There are many historical and cultural buildings and studios in the community, and visitors come in and out during the day. The structure of the community is relatively complex, and there is no uniform house number, which makes it difficult to deliver services. The entrance to the community is narrow, half of which is occupied by parked bicycles, and the usable width is very small. In September and October, we went to the community for two field trips and took some photos. Half of the walls in the community have been renovated. The park next to the community has also been built, and nearby residents will rest and socialize in the park. There are also new coffee stations in the park. But there are still many problems.

We learned about the composition of community residents through offline interviews and online reports. The residential area is relatively dense, with an average household size of about 31 square meters. The house renting rate is 60-70%.

The residents in Shenchengli are heterogeneous and diverse, but due to differences in regions, ages, occupations, and living habits, some contradictions are gradually exposed.

Insights

The community has a lot of room for improvement in both hardware and software. I have summed up four obvious problems that can be integrated and solved

Cité Mémoire is currently the largest immersive tour projection project in the world. When night falls, in the old city of Montreal, citizens and tourists follow the mobile phone APP route guidance, or follow the old city road signs to guide, self-explore and watch stories, understand the history of Montreal, witness the changes of the times, and cause thinking.

Shen Cheng Li is a small community, but it has an excellent location and a unique community history and culture. This community has attracted many foreigners to settle down. However, the high mobility of the population also makes many residents and nearby people ignore the soft power of the community.

Ideation

Based on the demographic structure and demands of community users, I decided to use the form of WeChat mini-programs and field projections as the main body of the project design.

Animation and Virtual Community

3D animation created in Maya with CC particle system. The particle generators are attached with imported models, which composes particles in certain shape.

2D animation created in Adobe After Effect. I used a variety of equations to achieve dynamic ripple effects and text deformation effects. I can currently make text appearing, dissipating, and morphing at once. In the future I'm thinking about making animations in a continuously changing pattern

At present, the GIS plug-in (real-time terrain display) in Unity is still under development, so I refer to the pictures taken in the field trip and Google Maps, and build a virtual model of the community through 3D modeling in Unity.
I adjusted the Alpha Channel of the animation file and then used a shader in Unity to remove the background of the animation file.

Finally, I built a virtual camera in Unity and simulated the display effect of projection animation under different ambient light.nity through 3D modeling in Unity.
